How Can I Improve Horsepower With a Jeep Performance Chip Tune?
Are you feeling like your Jeep’s engine has more to give, even if it’s already performing well? You’re not alone! Many Jeep owners wonder if they can squeeze a bit more out of their vehicle, perhaps a quicker acceleration or even an improvement in fuel economy.
Unlocking Your Jeep’s Full Potential
You might be asking yourself: Can I improve my Jeep’s fuel mileage without a trip to the mechanic? What exactly are these Jeep performance chips I’ve been hearing about, and can they really boost my Jeep’s performance?
We’ll answer these questions and more, explaining how a Jeep performance chip can help your vehicle run better than ever. To understand how these chips work, let’s first take a look under the hood.
The Brain of Your Jeep: The ECM/ECU
At the heart of your Jeep’s operations is the Engine Control Module (ECM), also known as the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This crucial module, typically found in your engine bay or near the fuse box, controls how your engine runs by processing real-time data.
Your Jeep is equipped with hundreds of tiny sensors throughout, from your tires to your fuel tank. Each sensor constantly sends data back to the ECU. The ECU analyzes this information thousands of times per second, making continuous adjustments to keep your engine performing optimally. While these constant adjustments ensure your Jeep is always running its best, manufacturers program certain performance caps into the ECU during initial installation. This is where a Jeep performance chip can make a significant difference!
How The Chip Works
The chip works by importing new data into your car’s ECM or control module unit. This importing process takes some time to complete and will take a few days or a few hours depending on how much you drive. The process starts by putting the device (where the performance chip is located) into your car’s OBD-II port. This port is located at the bottom of your dashboard, below your steering wheel. This is the same port that you use when you plug in a scan tool to get data about error codes.
You leave the device plugged into the port and you simply drive with it plugged in for a while. The typical time frame for the installation process to be completed is around 150 miles. Don’t let the quietness of a device just plugged into your data port fool you, there is quite a lot of activity going on inside your ECM as you drive.
As previously mentioned, the performance chip is sending new information to the ECU as you drive. What in essence is happening is the ECU is developing new limits (or parameters) as you drive. The benefits are plentiful with a performance chip as these are just some of them listed below:
- Standard performance chip improves performance by 10-20 hp and improves fuel mileage by 1-2 mpg.
- Mid-Grade performance chip improves performance by 20-40 hp and improves fuel mileage by 2-4 mpg.
- Premium performance chip improves performance by 40-60 hp and improves fuel mileage by 4-6 mpg.
Jeep

Jeep was formed during World War II as a combat vehicle to help the Allies during the war effort. The Jeep performed flawlessly during the war and civilian models were made at the Willys-Overland Company in Toledo, Ohio in the post-war years. Jeep has undergone a few changes in ownership over the years from Kaiser Motors to AMC (American Motors Corporation) to Chrysler to Daimer-Chrysler to its current owners Stellantis North America, parent owners of Chrysler.
Jeep Popular Models
Here are the most popular Jeep models:
Jeep Renegade
The Renegade is Jeep’s answer to the Crossover SUV market and delivers admirably. The Renegade comes with terrain select system and larger tires than other standard versions of Jeep models.
Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon
In 2007, Jeep released this special version of the Wrangler to great acclaim. The JK Unlimited Rubicon came with tow hooks and Dana axles with an eye for the off-road experience!
You don’t have to settle for what the manufacturer gives you for engine performance. You can set your own limits with a Jeep performance chip tune!
